Dates are proven as a natural source of sugar, fibre, and folate (folic acid). I am sure that many of us have bought or considering to buy folic acid supplements to assist the baby’s development. Folic acid is a type of vitamin B and is well-known for lowering anemia & birth defects.

Dates provide rich folates, but what do folates do?

Folic acid helps to form neuro tubes, which lowers the chances of getting neural tube defects (NTDs).

NTDs affect the baby’s spine, brain, and skull development, which could harm the baby physically and intellectually.

It is recommended to increase the intake of folic acid when you plan to get pregnant and during the first trimester. You can take folic acid supplements, or consider eating more dates!

Do dates help my delivery?

Yes.

A research done in 2017 in Malaysia revealed that those who took dates needed less pitocin augmentation. Pitocin augmentation help to increase the uterus contraction rate and intensity.

Another research showed that dates might assist cervix dilation (opening up) and increase the chances of natural birth. (Good news to those who don’t want a C-section!)

If you want to reduce the chances of getting medical labour induction, you can try to eat dates during late pregnancy.

As always, consult your doctor if you have any doubts.
